The only beauty treatment you need to book for Christmas

Get that festive flutter.

As fun as the festive season is, it can be a nightmare in terms of beauty maintenance. Blow-dries, glittery manicures, not to mention the obligatory spray tan to mask the months without any sun. But if there’s 1 treatment that takes the edge off the everyday regime, it has to be an LVL Lash Lift that will have you saying a swift buh-bye to your mascara (and false lashes for that matter!). The treatment from Nouveau Lashes is essentially an extreme version of the eyelash perm using more sophisticated chemical combinations, followed by a dye job to add depth to the lashes. Keen to experience it for herself, Lottie from Glamour, she booked in for the treatment *immediately*.

A bit of backstory; I’ve always battled with my natural lashes; they’re short and blonde (I am brunette) and without mascara, I can look like I don’t have any at all. For that very reason, I categorically get them dyed before every holiday so that I can go mascara-free on the beach. With a holiday imminent, I couldn’t wait to take my dye-job to new levels with LVL.

How does a lash lift work?

My LVL therapist arrived and explained the treatment. The first step is applying shields around the eye area to protect the skin and then taping down the lashes to ensure precise application. Then, time for the lifting balm, which stimulates a chemical process at the root of the eyelash to break down the disulphate bonds and allowing them to become malleable. The next step is applying the volumising fix gel, which reforms the disulphate bonds into a new, curled up shape, and is what ensures maximum volume. Finally, a quick dye job to amplify the results and you’re good to go for 6 – 8 weeks!

Before LVL…

After LVL…

How long does LVL take to do?

All in all, the treatment took 1 hour 30 mins, which is no bad thing if, like me, you love any excuse to close your eyes and have a nap. The results were eye-opening (sorry). I couldn’t believe I didn’t have make up on. It looked like I had a coat of mascara on – minus any clumps. My lashes were curled almost at a right-angle, making them seem twice the length, and the dye gave them that lustrous black finish.

How long do LVL lash lifts last for?

There’s no major aftercare involved, only that you can’t get your lashes wet for 48 hours post-treatment. I accidentally splashed one eye in the shower the next day and I swear the eyelashes on that side weren’t nearly as impressive from that moment on. On the first week, I didn’t need to put on mascara at all but by the second week, I was topping it up with a light coating. While it says it lasts 6 – 8 weeks, I only experienced a noticeable difference for 4, but that might be because the dye wears off quicker than the perm, and without the dye, my lashes get lost, but LVL certainly ticked all the boxes for barefaced beach beauty and will be a firm fixture in my pre-holiday prep from now on.

Do lash serums really work?

Before you book your next lash extension session consider using lash serum because they actually do work.

There is a lot of talk online about different serums and the results you might get. They are difficult to decipher, but if they have the active ingredient that encourages growth they will work.

There is a catch though, this is what you need to know before you invest in one.

Here is the thing about lash serums, for the most part they are simple lash conditioners, they will moisturise and nourish hair.

Over time your lashes may well look stronger and longer from using them, but they are pretty much like conditioning the hair on your scalp, not much else is going on.

Lash serum that actually helps lashes grow thicker and longer all have an ingredient called Prostaglandin (like the one below), here’s how it works.

Prostaglandin was a part of medication for glaucoma patients originally, patients reported fuller, longer lashes after using it.

It was then used by a lash serum company along the lash line, and resulted in longer and denser lashes.

Because there are issues around the serums with this ingredient, there is a risk of stimulation of pigment in the eyes or eyelids. For this reason many serums are prescription only.  Of the brands you can buy online or in beauty salons, these contain a variant of a prostaglandin so no prescription is needed.

So they do work, but there is a catch. It’s straightforward enough, lash serums can take a while to show results, anywhere up from several weeks to months.

This is related to the rate of growth of the lash, the serum is applied at root level and the lash grows from there.

And the other thing is that you must continue using serum to maintain results, stop and your lashes will grow how they used to. That said, when you know you have to make a commitment at least you know you will get the results you hoped for.

“I Got a Lash Lift, and OMG — the Hype Is So Real”

Carrie Carrollo from Popsugar tried and tested a lash lift.

My eyelashes and I have always had some beef. While I lust after long, wispy lashes, they’re short and naturally straight, and they refuse to stay curled for more than an hour at a time. I’ve tried my fair share of solutions — fibre mascaras, growth serums, and falsies, for example — but they all felt like a chore to apply. After trying them all, it started to look like eyelash extensions were my only hope.

But no matter how many Yelp pages I combed through and sketchy Groupons I narrowly stopped myself from buying, I couldn’t justify the cost and upkeep of extensions. I was prepared to accept a life of subpar lashes, but then something seriously magical happened: I discovered a Lash Lift!!

Like the name would suggest, a Lash Lift is a treatment that adds a semi-permanent curl to your lashes for 6-8 weeks! — at a time. Think of it as a mini version of the hair perm your mum sported in her glory days, sans regretful throwback photos. While extensions can easily run you over £150 and require touch-ups every three to four weeks, LVL Enhance Lash Lift’s have an average treatment price of £45, and the amount of aftercare maintenance is only applying the ‘Lash and Brow Conditioning Serum’.

I’ve become fully confident going mascara-free.

I’ve become fully confident going mascara-free when I’m in a rush and, to be honest, just feel prettier in general. Best of all, I haven’t touched a lash curler in over 12 (yes, literally 12) weeks! To see why I’m never turning back, read on for the full low-down on every step of the process, plus photos and tips.

How to Prep

The only thing you need to know is to arrive at your appointment with naked lashes. We all have places to be, so it’s OK if you’re coming from work with mascara-coated lashes (it will be removed pre-treatment), but it makes the entire process smoother and faster. As soon as you lie down on one of the comfortable beds, the *transformation* can begin.

What to Expect

From beginning to end, a lift is completed in 4 steps and takes approximately 40 minutes. It goes a little something like this:

Step 1: Choose your curl

Similar to extensions, you (and your natural set of lashes) have some say in the final product. Mine grow extremely straight, so my technician and I made the joint decision to go for the most dramatic look. Those who already have a bit of curl may prefer the “natural” option, and if you’re not sure which to choose, you can try something in between.

Step 2: Clean eyelids and lay down a shield

Annnd we’re off! The first order of business: protecting your bottom lashes by placing under eye treatment pads over them, directly below your water line. This ensures they stay out of the way and won’t accidentally get curled with your top lashes. Next, the area is gently cleaned to remove dirt and oils and a more gentle version of false eyelash glue is swiped onto your lids, aka the bonding gel. After it gets tacky, a shield (selected based on your curl of choice) is placed down.

Step 3: Glue lashes onto shield

Once the shield is safely in place, your lashes are adhered to it using the bonding gel in an upward-sweeping motion. This is done to “set” the shape of the curl for the entire process.

Step 4: Add lash lifting balm

When it comes time to do the actual lifting, the lifting balm is applied to the lashes, starting just above the root, which breaks down and resets the bonds in your hair. In simpler terms, it’s exactly what makes perm treatments as long-lasting as they are.

If you suffered a hair perm horror story in your younger days, be warned that it may induce some temporary hair PTSD. But if you’re a perm virgin like me, just know the scent is quite strong. I never felt any pain or burning. After they’re fully saturated, the lifting balm is left to sit for a few minutes dependant on the type of your lashes.

  • 10 Minutes: Fine, Dry, Sparse Lashes
  • 12 Minutes: Average, Healthy Lashes
  • 14 Minutes: Thick, Coarse, Dense Lashes
  • 16 Minutes: Extremely Thick, Coarse, Dense Lashes

Step 5: Remove lifting balm and apply the Volumising Fix

The lifting balm is removed with a Q-tip and a second formula is applied. My tech referred to this as Volumising Fix to essentially lock everything in. I’d like to mention that by this point in the treatment, I was on the verge of entering full-on dreamland. In other words: it’s extremely relaxing.

Step 6: Clean lashes

The Volumising Fix is removed, and a tint is applied. After the final timer goes off, the process is complete! The tint is removed, and your freshly curled lashes are carefully detached from the shields. The cotton pads and shields are discarded, and the area is thoroughly cleaned.

For aftercare, Nouveau Lashes ‘Lash and Brow Conditioning Serum’ must be purchased as an extra boost of strength and nourishment – similar to a clear mascara. Like they say, you wouldn’t skip conditioning your hair, so why not do the same for your lashes. Containing a complex blend of multi-vitamins and conditioning actives, this new and improved conditioning serum is the ultimate conditioner for lashes and brows. Packed full of nourishing goodness, used daily, this serum provides lashes and brows with all they need to appear instantly conditioned, as well as provide long-term benefits to help give a fuller appearance. Powerful anti-oxidants also help protect lashes and brows from everyday environmental pollutants. When used beneath mascara, it can also act as a primer. Suitable for both lash extensions and natural lashes, it’s the perfect aftercare item for our LVL treatment. The hypoallergenic formulation is gentle on even the most sensitive eyes.
